New English Language criteria for migrants marrying UK citizens
The UK government has announced today the introduction of compulsory English language tests for spouses and partners of UK citizens or permanent residents who apply for visas to settle in the UK.
“From Autumn 2010, spouses and partners who come to the UK from outside the European Economic Area will have to demonstrate basic command of English that allow them to cope with everyday life before they make their visa application,” the British High Commission in Colombo said in a news release.
The rules are intended to help migrants integrate into British society - to open up more opportunities, help prevent exploitation and allow them to benefit from and contribute more to their communities,” the release said.
